Rare and precious engagement ringsPlatinum rings are the second most highly sought after rings on the market, with the traditional gold topping the list. Platinum is more popular than gold solely down to it value as the platinum metal is pure and simple to use as a setting for a diamond. Platinum is made up from palladium and platinum but the rarer combinations are a form of rhodium, osmium, iridium and ruthenium and that latter give platinum rings the weight and expense that is associated with platinum. The rhodium makes it more durable and hardy and is mainly used as an outer coat. The prongs set perfectly in the hard metal and encase the diamond tightly and securely. The extra beauty of a platinum ring is that it is extremely unusual to have an allergic reaction to the skin as it is so pure. White gold engagement rings are similar in appearance to its more expensive counterpart but it lacks the strength and purity of platinum. The prongs are prone to breaking as white gold is not as easy to set into and this makes the diamond more likely to fall out. Rhodium is used to plate white gold as well but it will wear off after time and the white gold will turn slightly yellow in appearance. The diamond and gems that are chosen to decorate the heart of the ring are just as important and some of the most precious stones and gems include pure rubies, crystals, sapphires, quartz and pearls and a pavé setting can give the ring a unique touch. |
